Sailing holidays in Mallorca are often about getting away from the crowds and exploring beautiful coastline. The East coast is our main cruising ground & yachts from our bases in Alcudia & Pollenca are well placed to explore this coast South as far as Cabrera national Park by boat.
Both Alcudia bay & Porto Pollenca make for good day sailing destinations with plenty of beaches & Calas in which to anchor, swim or snorkel, and take a lazy lunch on board & eat what you have caught. Heading South from Alcudia bay involves a good day sail, Cala Rajada would naturally be the 1st stop & would make for a handy ½ way point in the 31 odd Nm down to Porto Cristo. It is however somewhere we try to avoid as the swell inside the harbour generally persists & makes for an uncomfortable stay, the town is OK but usually we press on South or when heading home coming from further South Pto Colom or Cala D’or will aim for Colonia St Pere & Alcudia.
This dramatic – initially hilly coastline may well be your introduction to the large windshifts part of Majorca charter as you round the various headlands. It is not uncommon to be sailing a broad reach toward another yacht running towards you coming from the South. Amongst the hills there are some great little white sand beaches with perhaps a small dwelling & maybe another boat anchored or you may just have the Cala to yourself for a few hours. The 2 most Southerly of these Matasoch & Busch tend to be the busiest.
As the landscape gives way to low cliffs, mountains inland rise behind and ribbon developments herald Porto Cristo & Port of Manacor. Maintaining the feel of a Spanish town with tourist trappings a nice stopover. Mooring wise The Town Quay is reasonably priced & in the thick of it with Club Nautico a nice place to stay, the pontoons are pretty ancient but its quiet, sheltered with pleasant facilities.
Heading further South we will find the best of the Mallorquain Calas with 2 or 3 harbours all within a shortish sail including Pto Colom, Cala D’or & Cala Figuera.
